How to make a simple app for yourself — without publishing it anywhere
No developer account, no review, no store listing. A plain-words walkthrough from idea to a tool on your phone.

Search “how to make an app” and every result ends the same way: create a developer account ($99/year on iOS), build, submit, wait for review, publish. That makes sense if you want strangers to download your app. It makes no sense if the app is for you.
A personal app skips all of that. Here is what the real path looks like.
What “publishing” actually requires
| Step | App Store route | Personal route |
|---|---|---|
| Developer account | $99/year (Apple), $25 (Google) | None |
| Build the app | Weeks with a builder, or hire | Describe it in 3–5 sentences |
| Review | 1–7 days, can be rejected | None |
| Updates | Resubmit, wait again | Say what to change |
| Who can use it | Anyone | You (and whoever you hand it to) |
Step 1 — Say what the tool does, in your own words
Don’t think in features. Think in sentences you’d say to a friend. Start with what you record, then what you want to see, then one rule that matters.
“A reading log. Each entry: book title, pages read today, one line of notes. Show total pages this month and a 7-day streak. Remind me at 21:30 if I haven’t logged today.”
- 1What you recordFields, in your words. “Client, order, pickup date, deposit.”
- 2What you want to seeA total, a streak, a list sorted by date, a red flag.
- 3One rule“Red if pickup is tomorrow and unpaid.” Rules are where generic apps fail you.
Step 2 — Use it the same minute
The app opens on your phone with your fields and your words. No install, no store, no account. It works offline because there’s no server behind it — your data lives on the device.
Step 3 — Edit when your life changes
In 2 months you’ll want a “finished” checkbox or a second reader in the household. You describe the change, the app changes. Nothing to resubmit, nobody to ask.
- Describe
- Use
- Edit
- Build the next one
That is the whole process. If you want strangers to download your idea, the store path exists and it’s fine. If you just want the tool, you never needed it.
