How to build a PWA without coding in 2026
Since iOS 26, any site added to the Home Screen opens as an app. The work that's left is the manifest, the icon and offline support.

What makes a website a PWA
A progressive web app is a website the phone can install like an app: its own icon, full screen, no browser bar, and optionally offline. Three parts make that happen:
- HTTPS. Every builder handles this.
- A web app manifest: a small file with the app's name, icons (192 px and 512 px), start page and display mode (“standalone” hides the browser bar).
- A service worker, for offline use and caching. Chrome doesn't require one to install the app, but without it the app shows an error with no signal.
No-code tools differ mainly in whether they generate all three for you.
What iPhone and Android do with it in 2026
- iPhone: since iOS 26, any website added to the Home Screen opens as a web app by default (Share → Add to Home Screen, with “Open as Web App” on). There's no automatic install prompt, so tell users where the button is. Web apps on the Home Screen can send push notifications since iOS 16.4, after the user allows them with a tap.
- iPhone storage: a Home Screen web app gets the same storage quota as the site in Safari. Safari deletes site data after 7 days without use, but Home Screen apps keep their own counter, so data stays as long as the app is used.
- Android: Chrome offers to install once the page has a manifest and the visitor has tapped and spent at least 30 seconds on it. Chrome turns the install into a WebAPK, so the app appears in the launcher and in Android settings like any other.
- EU: Apple planned to remove Home Screen web apps in the EU in 2024 and reversed the decision; they still work there.
Three routes without code
1. A builder whose output is already a PWA. Glide apps are PWAs by default. Softr offers a PWA on its Professional plan and up, but it doesn't work offline. Adalo publishes PWAs from its Builder plan, on a custom domain. Our comparison of no-code PWA builders covers them, including which work offline.
2. An AI builder, then ask for the PWA parts. Lovable and Bolt produce web apps; neither documents an automatic manifest or offline support. Ask for them in the prompt: “add a web app manifest with name, 192 and 512 px icons, standalone display, and a service worker that caches the app for offline use”. Then test it (below).
3. Describe the app and use it on your phone. With Leanfinit you describe the app and publish it to the web; the app runs on your device with no server behind it and works offline. Free during the beta. If you'd rather start from a free iPhone route, here are the three that cost nothing.
Test it in five minutes
- 1Add to Home ScreenShare → Add to Home Screen on iPhone. Full screen, your icon.
- 2Install on AndroidWait for Chrome’s offer, or menu → Install app.
- 3Airplane modeOpen it from the Home Screen. Loads? Offline works.
- 4Close and reopenThe entry you added should still be there.
- 5NotificationsTest only from the installed app on iPhone.
No app of your own yet? Run the five steps on a gym log you can install from this page. The same test applies to any tracking app that has to work offline.
Do you need the stores at all?
To appear in the App Store or Google Play, wrap the PWA: Microsoft's free PWABuilder packages it for Google Play ($25 one-time account) and, experimentally, for the App Store, which needs a Mac and Apple's $99 a year. For an app you or your team use, the Home Screen is enough; PWA vs native app covers what you give up. For the wider picture, see the best way to build an app without coding.
FAQ
Can I build a PWA without coding?
Yes. Use a builder whose apps are PWAs, ask an AI builder for a manifest and service worker, or describe the app with a tool that publishes it to the web.
Does a PWA work on iPhone?
Yes. Since iOS 26, any site added to the Home Screen opens as a web app, and Home Screen web apps can send notifications.
Does a PWA work offline?
Only if it has a service worker that caches it. Test with airplane mode.
Is a PWA free to publish?
Publishing on the web is free on many builders; app store listings cost $99 a year (Apple) and $25 once (Google).
