ChatGPT wrote my app. Now where do I run it?
The gap every AI chat leaves open — and the 3 places that code can actually live.

You asked ChatGPT for a tip-splitting app. It gave you 300 lines of something called React, said “run npm start”, and wished you luck. You don’t have npm. You have a phone.
This is the most common dead end in “AI builds apps”, and it isn’t your fault. A chat produces text. Text is not an app until something runs it.
What the chat gave you (and didn’t)
| You have | You still need |
|---|---|
| Source code in a text box | A place that runs it |
| Instructions for a terminal | A computer with the tools installed |
| A single version | A way to change it later |
| No storage | Somewhere your data is saved |
Option 1 — Paste it into a web host
Services like Netlify or Vercel can run simple HTML. It works if the chat gave you plain HTML/JS, if you can create accounts, and if you don’t mind the app living at a public URL. Data usually isn’t saved between visits.
Option 2 — Rebuild it in a no-code builder
Builders give you a database and a visual editor, but you start over: the chat’s code is useless there. Expect a weekend of learning and a monthly plan to keep it published.
Option 3 — Describe it where it runs
The missing step disappears if the thing that writes the app is the same thing that runs it. You describe the tip-splitter, and it opens on your phone with your data stored locally. No code to paste, nothing to host, nothing to publish.
| Chat + host | No-code builder | Described | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Accounts needed | 2–3 | 1 | 0 |
| Code to handle | Yes | No | No |
| Data saved | Rarely | Yes (cloud) | Yes (device) |
| Monthly fee | Sometimes | Usually | No |
| Change it later | Re-paste | Re-edit | Say it |
“Tip and bill splitter: bill amount, tip % (15/18/20/custom), number of people, show per-person total. Round up to the nearest dollar if I tap “round”.”
The chat was right that your idea is buildable in minutes. It was just the wrong room to build it in.
