PWA or native app? For a tool only you use, the answer changed in 2026
The gap that used to justify the App Store has narrowed to a short list. Here's the list.

Where they're now equal
For an app you or your family use, most of the old differences are gone on current iPhones and Android phones:
- Install: since iOS 26, any website added to the Home Screen opens as an app, full screen with its own icon. Chrome on Android installs it as a WebAPK that sits in the launcher and in settings like a store app. Try it with a 75 Hard calendar added to the Home Screen.
- Notifications: Home Screen web apps on iPhone can send push notifications since iOS 16.4, once the user allows them with a tap.
- Offline: a web app with a service worker opens and saves entries without a signal.
- Badges: the icon can show a count on iPhone since iOS 16.4.
Where native still wins
- Deep system features: Health data, home-screen widgets, Bluetooth accessories, background tasks that run while the app is closed.
- Discovery: being found by strangers searching the App Store or Google Play.
- Storage guarantees: a web app shares Safari's storage rules. Home Screen apps keep their data as long as you use them, but the browser can still clear the least recently used data under storage pressure. For anything you can't lose, keep an export, even from a private body measurements tracker.
- A one-tap install prompt on iPhone: iOS has none for web apps; the user taps Share → Add to Home Screen.
What each costs
- Web app on the Home Screen: no store fee, no review, changes live immediately.
- Native on the App Store: Apple's $99 a year, App Review for every update, plus a builder plan that can produce a store build (from $20–65 a month; see app builder pricing compared).
- Native on Google Play: $25 once, and new personal accounts need 12 testers for 14 days before launch.
A quick way to decide
Answer three questions:
- 1Do strangers need to find it in a store?Yes → native.
- 2Health data, a widget, Bluetooth, work while closed?Yes → native.
- 3OtherwiseA web app on the Home Screen does the job, for free.
Most personal tools, such as trackers, logs, checklists and small calculators, land on 3. That's the kind of app Leanfinit makes: you describe it, it runs on your phone with no server behind it, and your entries stay there. Free during the beta. FAQ
Is a PWA as good as a native app?
For trackers, lists and logs, yes on current iPhones and Android phones. Native still wins on widgets, Health data, Bluetooth and background tasks.
Do PWAs work on iPhone in 2026?
Yes. Any site added to the Home Screen opens as a web app since iOS 26, and notifications work since iOS 16.4.
Can a PWA lose my data?
It's kept as long as you use the app, but the browser can clear storage under pressure. Keep an export of anything important.
Do PWAs still work in the EU?
Yes. Apple reversed its 2024 plan to remove them.
